Keep Your AC in Downriver MI Running Smoothly with These 5 Tips

Most people ignore their air conditioner until there is some type of problem or they realize that it’s simply not working as well as it should. Usually this happens over time but can happen suddenly. But in either case it’s usually when the air conditioner is most taxed and pushed to the limits of it’s efficiency. During this time is when a breakdown occurs or when problems tend to show themselves. To avoid problems with your air conditioner there are some things that you can do to help ensure it lasts a long time. Here are 5 tips that can help make sure your AC is ready for the summer ahead:

Keep the Air Filter Changed

One of the most important things you can do to help the efficiency of your air conditioner is to keep the air filter changed. Air filters are fairly inexpensive and can typically be changed in just a few short minutes depending on the make and model of your AC system. Many things can also influence how often your air filter needs changing as well. Dusty weather can tend to make air filters clog up faster. Plus, some areas that have more dust and debris in the air can affect them. If you think that your air filter needs to be changed more often, replacing it with a new one is usually better than leaving the old one in place. If you’re unsure, make sure you talk with a technician about your situation if you get an annual inspection on the air conditioner.

Make Sure Vents are Clear

Most air conditioners are designed to push a volume of air throughout the home by way of ventilation ducting and registers in floors, walls, or ceilings. These vents can sometimes become covered with clothes, furniture, or rugs. Closing off a vent means putting more air pressure in the ducts which can sometimes cause problems. While a blocked vent usually isn’t much of a problem, if you have several blocked vents it can start to put the blower motor under more pressure causing the unit to use more energy and to heat up more than normal. Pets also sometimes like to lay on return vents which can quickly become blocked with pet hair. A large dog can sometimes block much of the vent so ensure that is not happening as well.

Ensure AC Drains Are Not Clogged

During the time the air conditioner is working, there is likely water which needs to be expelled from the system. This is usually done by a drain tube on the exterior of your home. For wall and window units this drain can simply be a tube from the back of the air conditioner. It is normal for water to drip from this unit during operation. Make sure that the drain is not clogged and the water is able to escape.

Clear Around Exterior Units

While most of the bulk of the air conditioner will be on the exterior of the home it is still important to have it remain clear. Any weeds or bushes that are growing beside or against the unit can start to restrict air flow to the unit. This can cause the unit to overheat and not be able to cool the freon in the unit as it needs. Clear ample space around the system and make sure there are not any sort of weeds or shrubbery which restricts air flow around the air conditioner system.
